Let’s dive right in!

How Strict is SkyWest Airlines With Its Carry-on Luggage Policy?

Due to equipment size and operational constraints, SkyWest Airlines is considered relatively strict in regard to passenger carry-on allowances. SkyWest passengers are entitled to only one carry-on item and one small personal item (purse/laptop bag/briefcase, etc.)

SkyWest Airlines maintains that the carry-on bag size limit for its passengers has been changed to 22” x 14” x 9′,’ including the wheels and handles. The airline recommends carefully measuring your carry-on before you fly. In addition to your carry-on bag, you’ll also be allowed one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack, diaper bag, or laptop bag.

SkyWest Airlines, like other airlines, implements its own policies, taking into account Travel Safety Administration (TSA) requirements. Note that SkyWest Airlines is considered fairly strict in regard to carry-on/personal items brought on board its flights. If your luggage is deemed “oversize,” you could have to pay additional check-in fees at your boarding gate.

Carry-on luggage items have size restrictions, but not weight restrictions, and are typically stowed in the luggage bins overhead of passenger seats. Personal items typically are stowed underneath each passenger’s seat, though they may also need to go in the overhead bin.

SkyWest Airlines’ Carry-on Baggage Policy

Including handles and wheels, your carry-on luggage on SkyWest Airlines flights are not to exceed

19” l x 13” w x 9” h (48 x 34 x 23 cm), or 41 linear inches/104 cm

with a maximum prescribed weight of 15 lbs (7 kg).
Carry-on items any larger than these dimensions will need to be checked, even if at the gate during boarding.

Note that SkyWest passengers on flights with 50 seats or fewer are allowed only one personal item on board.

For partner airline scheduled flights, “all other partner baggage information applies as outlined on their [respective] sites,” according to the SkyWest website. Partner airlines (with their respective carry-on/checked item allowances) include United Airlines (as United Express), Alaska Airlines (Alaska SkyWest), Delta Air Lines (Delta Connection), and American Airlines (American Eagle).

Take some preemptive cautionary steps beforehand and invest in some SkyWest/partner airline-compliant carry-on luggage so you can travel calmly.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Bag to Make Sure It Fits on a SkyWest Airlines Flight?

To help you verify your baggage conforms with SkyWest Airlines carry-on size restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 19″ x 13″ x 9″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your carry-on bag before you leave for the airport to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, measures within SkyWest’s online item size policies.

It’s important to remember that the three dimensional measurements together – length + height + width – cannot add up to more than 41 linear inches/104 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your carry-on again after you’ve packed it, to ensure it still complies.

My SkyWest-compliant Baggage Recommendations

Would you like to know what carry-on luggage I would recommend for flying with SkyWest Airlines? I personally recommend the following SkyWest-compliant carry-on luggage bags because of the carrier’s strictness with its baggage policies.

This is a great carry-on bag for you if you’re looking to get top value out of your travel baggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag is one you’ll fall in love with, and it could end up being the last carry-on bag you’ll ever purchase!

SkyWest Airlines’ Carry-on Luggage Allowance

SkyWest Airlines passengers can bring one carry-on item and one personal item on board its flights (excluding flights with 50 seats or fewer only a personal item is allowed per passenger).

If your carry-on bag has been deemed to be more than baggage dimension requirements (it should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin or underneath the seat in front of you), there’s a good chance you’ll have to check it for a fee

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto SkyWest Airlines Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard SkyWest Airlines flights in accordance with TSA regulations as long as they make it through TSA security checkpoints.

Liquid items in question include your toiletries and all other liquids and creams you may want to pack along. The TSA allows containers/bottles with no more than 3.4 fl. oz. / 100 fl. ml.

These liquid toiletries/items also need to be packed neatly into a re-sealable clear Ziploc-style plastic baggie, like these gallon-size baggies. Your baggie can’t be any larger than 7.8 x 7.8 inches (20 x 20 centimeters).

You’ll find plenty more information here on our TravelontheFly site about what items you are and aren’t allowed to bring on a plane with you.

You may also want to verify these requirements with the TSA’s website

How Strict Is SkyWest Airlines With Your Carry-on Size?

You shouldn’t have to worry about anything as long as your item(s) fit in the overhead bin above you or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible, I suggest complying with the carrier’s policies. If you need a new carry-on bag that will fit SkyWest’s (and its partner carriers’) guidelines, get this bag and don’t have to worry about it ever again.

How Strict Is SkyWest Airlines With Your Carry-on Baggage Weight?

SkyWest is one of the few exceptions that limit carry-on baggage weight. Most airlines are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight but rather with spaces in the cabin where carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably.

Carry-on bags on SkyWest flights are limited to 15 lbs (7 kg) in weight.

Should I Risk Flying on SkyWest Airlines With an Oversized Carry-on?

You can try, if you don’t mind paying extra baggage fees when you travel. Most master travelers will likely ask you, “Why risk it?” And I would have to agree with them. But know that if your bag is only slightly larger than SkyWest Airlines’ specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is too large, is that you will have to check your bag at the gate, possibly for a fee.

PRO TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with a slightly larger piece of luggage if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags like this one here. They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots, including into the overhead bins on a plane!

SkyWest Airlines Checked Baggage Fees

SkyWest Airlines passengers are allowed to check in one bag for free, not to exceed 44 lbs/20 kg.

For bags weighing more than 44 lbs, overweight baggage fees are assessed on a per kilogram basis at a rate of $5/kg (2.2 lbs), up to a maximum of 100 kg (220 lbs) for all your check-in baggage total. Individual bags heavier than 70 lbs (32 kg) are not accepted.

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within SkyWest Airlines’ size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

You can read more about SkyWest Airlines’ checked bag policies here, as you’re preparing for a specific upcoming flight.

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within SkyWest Airlines’ Carry-on Luggage Limits?

I recommend this great carry-on bag that is a great value for the money.

And this Travel Pro bag is more than enough for even the pickiest travelers.

How Strict Is SkyWest Airlines With Its “One Personal Item” Policy?

SkyWest Airlines is considered to be relatively strict in regard to baggage sizes and weights. One small personal item is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items), as well as a carry-on item within SkyWest online item allowances. As long as your personal item can easily be carried and stored underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead luggage bin, SkyWest Airlines representatives probably won’t ask to verify its size. Carry-on bags are technically supposed to be 15 lbs (7 kg) or less; if weighing more, you may be assessed $5/kg (2.2 lbs) for weight overage. Note that passengers flying on aircraft with 50 seats or fewer are allowed only a personal item on board.

SkyWest Airlines’ Personal Item Policy

Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. SkyWest passengers flying on aircraft with 50 seats or fewer are allowed only a personal item on board.

Carrying Additional Items Onto SkyWest Airlines Flights

In addition to your carry-on bag and personal item onboard SkyWest Airlines flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal, food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Did you know? – SkyWest Airlines, though a regional airline, is the largest regional carrier in North America according to fleet size, number of passengers, and number of destinations. The airline, headquartered in St. George, Utah, receives revenues to staff, operate and maintain aircraft used on flights scheduled, marketed and sold by partner mainline airlines. These airlines currently include United Airlines (as United Express), Alaska Airlines (Alaska SkyWest), Delta Air Lines (Delta Connection), and American Airlines (American Eagle). You may have already flown a SkyWest flight without knowing!

Is the First Checked Bag Free on SkyWest Airlines Flights?

Yes, passengers are allowed to check their first bag for free on SkyWest Airlines flights. 44 lbs/20 kg.

Read more about SkyWest Airlines’ checked bag policy here.

So, How Strict is SkyWest Airlines About Carry-on and Personal Items?

SkyWest Airlines passengers are allowed to take one carry-on bag and one personal item on board its flights, in accordance with TSA regulations. Both of these items should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin, or one of them should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with SkyWest Airlines’ regulations, like this one.

In case you choose to take this risk with SkyWest Airlines by bringing a larger bag, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed to be “oversized,” you could be charged a bag check-in fee at your boarding gate. Remember that SkyWest passengers on flights with 50 seats or fewer are only allowed one personal item.

How Strict is Air Canada Airlines With Its Carry-on Luggage Policy?

Want to know how strict Air Canada is regarding its carry-on item policy? Air Canada is considered to be relatively strict in terms of carry-on luggage and personal items brought on board. Air Canada’s rule of thumb is that if you’re traveling only with carry-on luggage, you’ll be able to take one carry-on bag on board as well as a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack, diaper bag, or laptop bag.

The airline maintains that your carry-on bag must fit in the sizer to ensure it can be easily stored in the overhead compartment. Air Canada recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling.

Air Canada, like other airlines, establishes and implements its own policies. Note that if your luggage is deemed “oversize,” you could have to pay additional check-in fees at your boarding gate.

Carry-on luggage items have size restrictions, but usually not weight restrictions, and are typically stowed in the luggage bins overhead of passenger seats. Personal items typically are stowed underneath the seat of each passenger, though they may need to go in the overhead bin, as well.

Air Canada has a sliding scale for its checked bag charges, depending upon where you’re flying from and to. Unless you’re flying Air Canada’s Latitude fare, pricing for your first checked bag starts at $30 CAD ($22 USD) , and $50 CAD ($37 USD) for your second checked bag. Additional checked bag fees start at $100 CAD ($74 USD).

Read more about Air Canada’s checked bag policy here.

So, How Strict is Air Canada About Carry-on and Personal Items?

Air Canada passengers can take one carry-on bag and one personal item on board their flights. Both of these items should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin, or one of them should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with Air Canada’s 21.5” x 15.5” x 9” size requirements, like this one.

You’ll also get to bring on board a smaller personal item, 17” x 13” x 6” or smaller. In case you choose to take a risk by bringing a larger bag onto an Air Canada flight, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed “oversized,” you could be charged a bag check-in fee at your boarding gate.

How Strict Is Allegiant Air With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

How strict is Allegiant Air when it comes to carry-on or personal item size?

Maybe you’ve flown Allegiant in the past, or maybe you’re about to try the airline out for the first time. Still, you might be wondering about how strict the airline is regarding passenger luggage size restrictions for carry-on and personal items.

I am going to cover a number of questions I have received about Allegiant’s carry-on and personal item policies as well as share links to relevant and important information.

And if you need new carry-on bags, take a look at these Allegiant-compliant ones:

This great carry-on bag is for travelers that want to get the best value out of their luggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag could end up being the last carry-on bag you ever purchase!

How Strict is Allegiant Air With Its Carry-on Luggage Policies?

So, just how strict is Allegiant Air with carry-on item restrictions?

Allegiant Air is considered to be relatively strict among travelers, and the carrier allows passengers to bring on board one personal item (e.g., a purse, handbag, briefcase, small backpack, etc.) free of charge that must be easily stored underneath the seat in front of you. One carry-on bag (e.g., (e.g., roll-aboard luggage, garment bag, etc.) per passenger may be purchased, as well.

Allegiant Air is not nearly as concerned with carry-on item weight, as it is with its size. If any of your carry-on items happen to be to be deemed oversized, there’s a very good chance you’ll end up paying additional fees, especially if you’re on a full flight.

Allegiant, like other carriers, implements its own policies, taking into account Travel Safety Administration (TSA) requirements.

Carry-on items have size restrictions, but typically not weight restrictions, and they are stowed in the luggage bins overhead of the passenger seats. Personal items typically are stowed underneath the seat of each passenger, though they may need to go in the overhead bin, as well.

Allegiant Air’s Baggage Policy

Including handles and straps, your personal item on Allegiant flights is not to exceed:

16″ L (40 cm) x 15″ W (38 cm) x 7″ H (17 cm)
Items any larger than these dimensions may need to be checked, even if at the gate during boarding.

Paid carry-on items, including handles, straps, and wheels cannot exceed
22″ L (55 cm) x 14″ W (35 cm) x 9″ H (22 cm), OR 45 total linear inches/114 linear cm (L + W + H).
and need to be able to fit under the seat in front of you, or in the overhead bin.

Allegiant does not currently impose weight restrictions for passenger carry-on or personal items, as long as they can be lifted into the overhead bin without assistance if the item does not fit beneath the seat in front of you.

Take some preemptive cautionary steps beforehand and invest in some JetBlue-compliant carry-on luggage, so that you can travel with peace of mind.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Items to Make Sure They Fit on an Allegiant Air Flight?

To help you verify your carry-on items conform with Allegiant restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 22″ x 14″ x 9″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your carry-on bag before you leave for the airport, to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, falls within Allegiant size requirements.

It’s important to remember that the three dimensional measurements together – length + width + height – cannot add up to more than 45 linear inches/114 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your carry-on again after it’s packed, to ensure it still complies.

My Allegiant-compliant Baggage Recommendations

Need a recommendation for carry-on baggage for flying with Allegiant Air? I personally swear by the following Allegiant-compliant carry-on bags because of the carrier’s strictness with its carry-on size policies.

This is a great carry-on bag for great lasting value out with your travel baggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag is one you’ll fall in love with (like I did!), and it could end up becoming the very last carry-on bag you’ll ever purchase!

Allegiant Air’s Carry-on Luggage Allowance

Allegiant Air passengers are allowed to each bring one personal item on board its flights, with the opportunity to pay for one carry-on item per passenger.

If your carry-on item has been deemed to be in excess of baggage dimension requirements (it should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin or underneath the seat in front of you), you will likely have to check it for a fee (Fees for your first and second checked bags are up to $35 per bag each way (the specific amount depends on your departure and arrival airports).

You can reserve bags pre-departure through “Manage Travel” or at “Online Check-In,” but fees are slightly higher, costing between $15 and $45 each way.).

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto Allegiant Air Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard Allegiant flights in accordance with TSA regulations, as long as they make it through TSA security checkpoints.

Liquid items in question include your toiletries and all other liquids and creams you may want to pack along. The TSA allows containers/bottles with no more than 3.4 fl. oz. / 100 fl. ml.

These liquid toiletries/items also need to be packed neatly into a re-sealable clear Ziploc-style plastic baggie, like these gallon size baggies. Your baggie can’t be any larger than 7.8 x 7.8 inches (20 x 20 centimeters).

You’ll find plenty more information here on our TravelontheFly site about what items you are and aren’t allowed to bring on a plane with you.

You can also verify these requirements on the TSA’s website

How Strict Is Allegiant Air With Your Carry-on Size?

Allegiant Air is known among travelers to be relatively strict about their carry-on baggage size/weight policies, but you shouldn’t have to worry about anything as long as your item(s) fit in the overhead bin above you or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible I’d suggest complying with the airline’s policies. If you need a new carry-on bag that will fit Allegiant’s (and other carriers’) size policies, get this bag and never even think about it again.

How Strict Is Allegiant Air Regarding Your Carry-on Baggage Weight?

Most airlines, including Allegiant, are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight, but carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably in the appropriate spaces. Meeting the size dimensions of your carry-on bags I mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on Allegiant Airlines With an Oversized Carry-on?

Should you risk trying to get a slightly larger carry-on bag onboard an Allegiant flight? I’d have to agree with most veteran travelers, and ask you, “Do you like paying extra fees? Why even risk it?” Keep in mind that if your bag is only slightly larger than Allegiant’s specified size requirements, you’ll likely be OK.

Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is deemed oversized, is that you will have to check your bag for $35 (for first or 2nd checked bag, if paid for when you book your flight). According to Allegiant’s website, “bag fees paid at the airport are $50 each way per passenger, per bag for a carry-on bag and for the first 5 checked bags.”

Allegiant Air Checked Baggage Fees

Allegiant’s website states, “At the time of booking: Save money by reserving your checked and carry-on baggage when you purchase your tickets online. Fees for the first and second checked bag are up to $35 per bag, each way with the specific amount depending on your departure and arrival airports.

At Pre-Departure: You can also reserve bags pre-departure through Manage Travel or at Online Check-In, but prices are slightly higher and will cost $15 to $45 each way.”

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within Allegiant’s size and weight policies, and then you will never have to worry about it!

You can read more about Allegiant Air’s checked bag policies here, as you’re preparing for a specific upcoming flight.

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within Allegiant Air’s Carry-on Luggage Limits?

I highly recommend this great carry-on bag that is a great value for the money.

And this Travel Pro bag is perfect, even for the most finicky travelers.

How Strict Is Allegiant Air With Its “One Personal Item” Policy?

Especially because of its competitive airfares, Allegiant Air is relatively strict in regard to baggage sizes and weights–especially for full flights. One small personal item is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). As long as your personal item can easily be carried and stored underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead luggage bin, Allegiant Air representatives likely won’t ask to verify its size.

Allegiant Air’s Personal Item Policy

Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin above.

Carrying Additional Items Onto Allegiant Air Flights

In addition to your carry-on bag and personal item onboard Allegiant flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal, food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items, unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on Allegiant Flights?

Is your first checked bag on Allegiant free? Allegiant charges for all items other than your free personal item. You can save money by reserving your checked and carry-on baggage when you purchase your airfare. Fees for the first and second checked bag are up to $35 per bag, each way with the specific amount depending on your departure and arrival airports.

You can also reserve bags pre-departure through “Manage Travel” or at “Online Check-In,” but prices will be slightly higher (between $15 and $45 each way).

Remember that Allegiant bag fees paid at the airport will cost you $50 each way per passenger, per bag for a carry-on bag and for the first 5 checked bags.

Checked bags on Allegiant flights must weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kilos) and measure under 80 total linear inches (203 centimeters) in length + width + height. Additional charges may apply for overweight bags, oversize bags, sporting equipment and/or excess baggage.

  • Oversized Checked Bag: length + width + height ( L + W + H) measuring more than 80 linear inches (203.2 cm) = $75.00 additional per
  • Overweight Bags: between 41 and 70 pounds (18.6-31.8 kilos) = $50.00 additional per
  • Overweight Bags: between 71 and 99 pounds (32.2-45.4 kilos) = $75.00 additional per

So, How Strict is Allegiant Air About Carry-on and Personal Items?

Allegiant passengers are each allowed to take one carry-on bag and one personal item on board its flights, in accordance with TSA regulations–note that Allegiant charges for bags other than your free personal item. Any carry-on items should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin, or one of them should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with JetBlue regulations, like this one.In case you choose to take a risk on an Allegiant Air flight by bringing a slightly larger bag, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. Bags that need to be checked at the airport will cost you $50 per bag, each way.

Personal carry-on items cannot exceed 17″ L (43.2 cm) x 13″ W (33 cm) x 8″ H (20.32 cm), and need to be able to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin.

Bags that don’t fit under the seat in front of you will need to be checked before you go through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint. Carry-on bags brought to your boarding gate will be checked for a $65 fee (if it is your 1st or 2nd checked bag) or $180 if it is your 3rd checked bag.

Note that JetBlue Blue Basic fare passengers are allowed a personal item to be brought on-board, but not a carry-on bag. There are some exceptions to this rule (minors traveling alone, active U.S. military members, Mosaic customers, Even More Space seat holders, etc.).

Checked bags cannot exceed 62” (157 cm) in linear inches/cm (length + width + height) or 50 pounds (23 kg) in weight.

Note that any bag that exceeds these requirements will be considered oversized and possibly overweight as well, and fees will apply as needed for size and weight.

In other words, if your bag is overweight AND oversized, the overweight fee ($150 USD) and the oversized fee ($150 USD) will be assessed. Neither bags in excess of 80 total linear inches (203 cm) nor bags weighing more than 99 lbs (44 kg) will be accepted.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

Have you ever heard of or flown WestJet Airlines? Perhaps you’re curious about what the Canadian airline’s policies are regarding carry-on and checked luggage, so be sure to read on. To answer your questions in this regard, I will cover as many of them as I can in this article here, and offer you links to additional relevant information.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Carry-On & Personal Item Size?

WestJet Airlines Ltd. is the second-largest Canadian airline, second only to Air Canada, and is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. WestJet operates an average of nearly 800 flights per day to transport over 66,000 passengers daily.

This great carry-on bag is for travelers that want to get the best value out of their luggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag could be the last carry-on bag you ever purchase!

Let me fill you in on WestJet’s current rules and regulations and then answer common questions I hear about them.

How Strict is WestJet Airlines With Its Carry-on Luggage Policy?

WestJet is considered among travelers as one of the stricter airlines in regard to baggage size and weight. WestJet recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling. In addition to your one carry-on bag, you’ll also be allowed one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack, diaper bag, or laptop bag.

WestJet Airlines, like other carriers, implements its own policies. If your luggage is deemed to be “oversize,” you could very well have to pay additional check-in fees at your boarding gate.

Personal items (e.g., laptop, purse, briefcase, etc.) should not exceed 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm).

Take some preemptive cautionary steps beforehand and invest in some WestJet-compliant carry-on luggage so that you can travel in peace and quiet.

Meeting the size dimensions of your carry-on bags I mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on WestJet Airlines With an Oversized Carry-on?

Most individuals who fly frequently will probably tell you, “No way!” And I would have to agree with them. But know that if your bag is only slightly larger than WestJet Airlines’ specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is too large is that you will have to check your bag at the gate, but then you can be charged $75 CAD ($56 USD) for checking an oversized bag.

WestJet Airlines Checked Baggage Fees

If you’re flying WestJet Premium, PremiumFlex, Business, or BusinessFlex, there is no charge for your first two checked bags. EconoFlex allows you one free checked bag.

Basic, Econo, and Member Exclusive tickets pay $30 CAD ($22 USD) for the first checked bag prepaid ($40 CAD/$30 USD at check-in) and $50 CAD ($37 USD) for the second checked bag prepaid ($60 CAD/$45 USD at check-in).

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations, and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within WestJet Airlines’ size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within WestJet Airlines’ Carry-on Luggage Limits?

I recommend this great carry-on bag that is an incredible value for the cost.

How Strict Is WestJet Airlines With Its “One Personal Item” Policy?

WestJet Airlines is considered to be quite strict in regard to baggage sizes and weights among travelers. One small personal item is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). Technically speaking, WestJet expects personal items to be 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm) or less in size, but as long as your personal item can easily be carried and stored underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead luggage bin, WestJet Airlines representatives probably won’t be asked about it.

WestJet Airlines’ Personal Item Policy

Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you, and dimensions should not exceed 16” l x 13” w x 6” h (41 cm x 33 cm x 15 cm). Read more about personal items on WestJet Airlines flights here

Carrying Additional Items Onto WestJet Airlines Flights

In addition to your carry-on bag and personal item onboard WestJet Airlines flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal, food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on WestJet Airlines Flights?

WestJet Airlines charges $30 CAD for the first checked bag and $50 CAD for the 2nd checked bag if they are prepaid. Overweight (>50 lbs/23 kg) and oversize bags are assessed an additional fee of $75 CAD.

Exceptions to checked baggage fee charges include: Strollers and car seats when traveling with infants or children.

So, How Strict is WestJet Airlines About Carry-on and Personal Items?

WestJet Airlines passengers are allowed to take one carry-on bag and one personal item on board its flights. Both of these items should be able to fit in an overhead luggage bin, or one of them should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with WestJet Airlines’ requirements, like this one.

In case you choose to take this risk with WestJet Airlines by bringing a larger bag, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed to be “oversized,” you could be charged a bag check-in fee at your boarding gate.
