Airport lounges are one of the best travel perk places to grab a quick snack, a drink, and some quiet time to relax before the next (or first) leg of your flight. Delta Airlines features a network of over 50 such lounges across the United States, and as of summer 2022, a new Sky Club in the Tokyo airport. Delta Sky Clubs come in different shapes, sizes, and degrees of quality (many select Delta Sky Clubs even feature hot showers), but they are a very sought-after amenity that can help take the edge off of a long day of traveling. 

How Much Is a Single Visit Pass to Delta Sky Club?

Unfortunately, Delta Sky Club single-day passes are no longer an option, but there are other ways you can enjoy this nice travel benefit.

What Is the Delta Sky Club?

Delta Sky Clubs are exclusive airport clubs that provide a wide variety of complimentary food, drinks, and services. Travelers can also enjoy free satellite TV, magazines, and newspapers, along with restrooms, and free high-speed WiFi. Some Sky Clubs also offer showers.

Delta Sky Club single-day passes are no longer available, though there are various ways to get yourself Delta Sky Club access, including the purchase of a membership. You may also earn certain levels of Delta elite Medallion traveler status (Gold or higher), and even obtain a Delta credit card to get in.

Eligible Delta passengers may visit Sky Clubs within three hours of their scheduled departure time, while connecting passengers may access Sky Clubs any time prior to departure. Arriving passengers, whether or not they have a connecting flight, may also access Sky Clubs. 

Delta Sky Club members with Executive Memberships or Delta Sky Club Guest Passes may bring two free guests (or a spouse/domestic partner and children under 21). They may also bring up to two additional guests for $39 USD per club visit, assuming travelers and their guests are flying on Delta or on one of its partner airlines.

Delta has begun expanding its Sky Club offerings with new lounges throughout its network, including the introduction of premium-only Delta One Clubs in 2023, which are meant to be airport lounges exclusively available to Delta One passengers.

How Much Does a Pass to the Delta Sky Club Cost?

Travelers can no longer purchase single-day Delta Sky Club passes, though they may buy a visit pass if they’re with eligible passengers with Sky Club access (members, eligible credit card holders, elite Delta travelers, etc.). If you are not with an eligible Delta Sky Club participant that can bring free guests, there is a $39 per visit charge. But you can’t just pay the $39 and enter alone without an eligible Sky Club member/participant.

What Credit Card Will Get Me Into the Delta Sky Club?

Delta has its own offerings in terms of credit cards, and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card will get you into Delta Sky Clubs assuming you’re traveling on a same-day Delta (or Delta partner airline) flight. You can also bring up to two guests with you for $39 each.

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card also offers Sky Club access for $39 per visitor, allowing you to bring up to two guests with you for $39 each. Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card holders used to have access to Sky Clubs, but no longer do.

There are non-Delta credit card options, as well: The AMEX Platinum Card and the AMEX Business Platinum Card.  

How Much For a Delta Sky Club Membership?

If you don’t happen to have a credit card that offers Delta Sky Club access, you might consider purchasing an annual membership. Keep in mind that in order to enter Sky Club lounges, you still need to be flying Delta or on a Delta partner airline on the same day. You can use your boarding pass within three hours of your scheduled departure or after your arrival that day.

Delta Sky Club memberships:

Executive Membership: $845 (or 84,500 Delta Sky miles) annually will get you unlimited Sky Club access as well as access for up to two guests per visit.

Individual Membership: $545 (or 54,500 Delta Sky miles) annually will get you unlimited Sky Club access along with access for up to two guests for $39 per guest per visit.

How Can I Get a Delta Sky Club Single Visit Pass?

You are eligible to purchase a single visit pass IF you have a Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card, and it will cost you $39 per visit. Other credit cards will get you in for free. Flying first or business class on Delta (or their partners) can get you in for free. Premium cabin travelers can usually get into Delta Sky Clubs. Note that any First- or Business-class ticket will NOT give you Sky Club access.  

What Gets Me Into the Delta Sky Club?

How can you get into a Delta Sky Club? Here are some ways you can access the Sky Clubs network-wide: By buying an annual Delta Sky Club membership (Executive for $845 per year (or 84,500 Sky Miles) or Individual for $545 per year (or 54,500 Sky Miles)), by flying on Delta One, by earning Gold or higher Medallion traveler status, or by carrying a credit card that offers Delta Sky Club access.

Are Drinks Free in Delta Sky Club?

Delta Sky Clubs offer complimentary food, beverages, and amenities, including satellite TV, newspapers and magazines, restrooms, and free high-speed WiFi. Many Sky Clubs even offer showers to guests. Upgraded food and beverage options are available for an additional cost.

Do First Class Tickets Get Access to Delta Sky Lounge?

Premium cabin travelers (e.g., Delta One) can sometimes gain access to Delta Sky Clubs, but just because you have a First- or Business-class ticket does not guarantee you access.

Are Delta Sky Clubs Available in Other Countries?

In July 2022, Delta opened its first international Sky Club location at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. The Sky Club offers 9,332 square feet of space to stretch out, eat some delicious food, and even enjoy a sake cocktail. It’s not the largest Sky Club, but certainly not the smallest, either. 

So, How Much Is a Single Visit Pass to Delta Sky Club?

While Delta used to offer single-day passes to its Sky Clubs, it no longer does. You can buy a $39 access pass if you’re traveling with a Sky Club member/participant (they might even be able to get you and another guest in free if they have qualifying access). Being a Delta elite Medallion traveler (Gold or higher), or flying Delta One, or having a qualifying AMEX Delta credit card can also get you varying degrees of access. You can also buy an annual membership (and if you travel a lot, you might find it to be worth the cost).

Should You Carry Your Passport With You in Iceland? – You don’t have to carry your passport with you as you travel throughout Iceland, but you’ll want to make sure your passport has at least three months of validity remaining after your planned departure, and six months of validity is recommended.

Do you need to Carry Your Passport With You in as you travel in Iceland?

Plan on leaving two pages in your passport for your entry stamp, but get ready for some of the most eye-catching scenery you may have ever witnessed yourself!

The vast majority of the Icelandic population resides in its capital, Reykjavik, known for running on geothermal power. The Nordic nation features massive, protected glaciers in its Snæfellsjökull and Vatnajökull national parks, as well as its Saga and National museums, which showcase Iceland’s rich Viking history.

Do You Need a Tourist Visa to Enter Iceland?

You do not need to worry about applying for a tourist visa if your stay in Iceland is for less than 90 days. Contact an Icelandic embassy or consulate for details about long-term visas, customs, etc., or visit their website. You’ll need to show proof of sufficient funds to stay (or a credit card), and proof of your return ticket.

Should I Carry My Passport When I Travel Throughout Iceland?

Once you have entered Iceland you are not expected to carry your passport with you, though you should carry some form of valid photo ID if you need to present it for any reason. The police do not make routine random stops on the street, but at your hotel, bank, or if you should get into an auto accident, have your ID ready. Also, it doesn’t hurt to carry a photocopy of your passport around with you as well, just in case. You can leave the original locked up at your hotel or other lodgings until it’s time for you to leave the country. 

Can I Carry My Passport In Iceland?

If you’re more comfortable carrying the original hardcopy of your passport with you as you travel around Iceland, be sure to carry it safely inside a security pocket of your pants, or in a money/security belt around your waist. In this instance, also keep a photocopy of your passport locked up at your hotel, and carry a photocopy with you securely in another pocket with you along with a valid photo identification. As one added layer of security, scan your passport, and any travel insurance documentation, then email these scans to yourself so you can easily access them electronically if you should be required to.

The U.S. State Department highly recommends that you treat your passport like a valuable by keeping it secured under lock and key at your hotel while touring around.

Can the U.S. Embassy Intervene on Behalf of U.S. Citizens in Iceland?

Iceland and the United States maintain friendly relations, though the reach and influence of U.S. diplomatic services can only do so much for you in immigration matters. If you are implicated in criminal activity, the U.S. cannot intervene on your behalf, and legal penalties won’t be waived.

Tips for Entry, Exit, and Traveling Through Iceland

1 – Iceland has never had any terrorist incidents, though Europe is known for countless terrorist cells plotting occasional attacks throughout the region. European governments, including the Icelandic government, are vigilant and on their guard against terrorist attacks, though even the highest security measures are not foolproof. 

2 – Iceland features a much lower crime rate than in the United States and in other countries, though violent crimes do occur from time to time in Iceland. Exercise prudence, vigilance, and common sense whenever traveling.

3 – Never leave bags containing valuables, including your passport, unattended anywhere (in bars, airports, nightclubs, public places, etc.). Do not leave your valuables in parked vehicles, even when locked.

4 – Downtown Reykjavik can become rowdy late at night until early morning, when people are out at bars and clubs, then while leaving. Don’t roam around downtown Reykjavik alone, and avoid poorly lit areas.

5 – It is recommended that all U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for important alerts, security messages, alerts, and to make it easier to be located during an emergency.

6 – Visitors to Iceland are subject to all local laws. Violation of these laws can get you arrested, imprisoned, and even deported. This includes drug possession, use, or distribution. The U.S. Embassy cannot do much for you if you’ve been caught violating Iceland’s laws. 

Some crimes, including those against minors and elders, are also punishable in the United States, regardless of where these violations occurred or of what the local laws will allow. U.S. citizens arrested or detained should ask the Icelandic police or other officials to alert the U.S. Embassy immediately.

7 – Importation of whale products to the United States is strictly prohibited. Though whale meat and other byproducts made using whale parts are sold throughout Iceland, the Marine Mammal Protection Act makes it expressly illegal to bring any such whale-based products back to the United States. The importation of any such products will result in the seizure of the goods and possible criminal penalties, including jail time and fines up to $10,000 USD.

8 – Before visiting Iceland (or any other country), it’s recommended for travelers to be current with all vaccinations required by their home health administration office (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for U.S. citizens). Always check the country’s website for pertinent information regarding other vaccinations that might be required.

9 – The medical care available in Iceland is high quality. For U.S. citizens, the Medicare and Medicaid programs do not cover medical expenses, nor does the U.S. Embassy. It’s recommended to purchase personal medical Insurance for yourself and your family members traveling with you: Double check that your health insurance plan offers coverage in foreign countries. It’s also strongly recommended to purchase supplemental medical evacuation insurance. Most medical providers in other countries take cash payments only.

10 – If you happen to be on prescription medication, it’s a good idea to verify with the Icelandic government that your prescription medication is legal to bring into their country. Always carry prescription medication in its original packaging with your doctor’s signed prescription.

11 – Drivers in Iceland drive on the right side of the road. Drivers in Iceland are also required to always have their headlights ON. Always inform someone of your travel plans.

12 – Icelandic road conditions may differ quite a bit from those you may be used to (less than one-third of Iceland’s roads are paved). Many roads outside of the capital city are not driveable during winter (October to April). Also note that driving in the winter comes with limited daylight hours, and you should plan accordingly so as to not get stranded somewhere unfamiliar in the dark of night. Some rural roads are impassable from April to July due to melting snow and flash flooding.

13 – Many bridges in Iceland are only one lane wide (signs will say “Enibreid bru”). Proceed with caution.

Visitors to Iceland are not required to carry their passports on their person, though you should carry some valid form of photo identification with you. You may also decide to carry a photocopy of your passport with you, as well as an electronic copy while leaving your original passport locked up in your hotel room.

You may need to present a photo ID at a bank or at the reception desk of your hotel, but Icelandic police do not typically stop individuals on the street without cause. You only need a visa to visit Iceland if you plan on staying more than 90 days for school or for business.

Upon entry into the country, you’ll also need to show proof of a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds (or credit cards). Your passport should be valid for six months following your intended departure from Iceland.

You should also carry a form of valid photo ID, like a passport card, enhanced driver’s license, military ID, etc. Traveling around the country, you should carry the original copy of your passport with you securely.

Should You Carry Your Passport around With You in Morocco?

Upon your arrival to Morocco, you should have at least six months of remaining validity on your passport, with one blank page for your entry stamp.

Visitors staying for less than 90 days are not required to obtain tourist visas in Morocco. You can contact a Moroccan embassy or consulate for up-to-date information regarding longer-term visas, customs, etc., or you visit the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco’s website.

If you should happen to overstay your time in Morocco for more than 90 days without having requested an official extension, note that you will need to appear before a Moroccan judge before you leave the country, and you may need to pay a fine. You’ll need to set up an appointment with the immigration office at the local police station for all pertinent information and to set up an appointment.

If this happens, U.S. citizens may visit the U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca to obtain a temporary emergency passport to show the police.

What If I Want to Extend My Stay in Morocco?

Travelers to Morocco who choose to establish residence in the country need to obtain an official residence permit (Certificat d’Immatriculation). Applications for such need to be submitted to the Bureau des Etrangers of the Prefecture de Police or Commissariat Central in larger cities, and to the Gendarmerie in smaller, rural towns. 

Can the Children and Spouses of Moroccan Citizens Leave Morocco Without Permission?

Children of Moroccan fathers traveling with their U.S. passports may have some difficulty leaving Morocco without their father’s permission, even if their parents are divorced and their mothers have legal custody. As far as Morocco is concerned, such children are considered Moroccan citizens. Female U.S. citizens married to Moroccan men do not need their spouse’s permission to leave the country.

Tips for Entry, Exit, and Traveling Through Morocco

1 – All countries in the North African region are vulnerable to unexpected terrorist attacks at any given moment. Moroccan security forces take consistent action against terrorist attacks, in conjunction with U.S. agencies, often successful in disrupting terrorist activities, though terrorist violence against U.S. citizens, in particular, is an ongoing concern. Isolated attacks are difficult to predict and prevent, and can occur without any warning. U.S. citizens in Morocco are frequently advised to be alert and extra cautious during their travels. U.S. citizens who are camping should do so in secured campgrounds rather than in isolated areas.

2 – Clubs, schools, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, movie theaters, U.S. brand facilities (e.g., McDonald’s), and other tourist areas are frequently targeted. 

3 – Tourists and foreigners are advised to stay current with the political/social climate and with events in Morocco. Demonstrations and strikes are common and frequent in the country, surrounding various political and social issues–they rarely become violent or hostile. During times of political/social tension, large demonstrations are common in larger cities. All demonstrations are legally required to obtain a government permit ahead of time, but spontaneous, unofficial demonstrations have an increased potential for violence, are always possible, though less common. If possible, avoid areas where demonstrations or strikes are going on.
 

4 – Be extra vigilant in places that can attract large crowds, like concerts or sporting events. If you should be caught in the middle of a demonstration or strike, stay calm and exit the area as quickly as you can when you have a safe opportunity.

5 – Because of past conflict and ongoing low-intensity conflict along the border between Morocco and the POLISARIO Front, there are thousands of unexploded mines in the Western Sahara area as well as in areas of Mauritania near the Western Saharan border. Active mines frequently explode, causing injury and even death. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid the area.

6 – Crime in Morocco is also an ongoing serious concern, especially in major cities and popular tourist areas, so exercise caution and common sense. Pickpockets are prevalent. Never leave luggage, possessions, or valuables unattended in any public place, especially crowded ones. Crimes are common any time of day or night. Criminals in Morocco are known to employ weapons (mainly knives), while committing robberies and burglaries. Stealthy crimes are more common than confrontational ones, though break-ins can turn hostile and dangerous.

7 – Panhandlers and purse-snatchers, as well as thefts from unattended vehicles and the harassment of women are the most common offenses.

8 – Tourists should avoid soccer stadiums and the areas surrounding them on days of scheduled matches, as rioting and harassment of passersby are frequent.

9 – Whenever possible, travel, shop, jog, etc., with a companion or in a group. Taxis are considered safe, though city buses are not. Travel using petit taxis whenever possible (In Casablanca, they are red, in Rabat, they are blue, and in Marrakech, they are tan).

10 – Trains are also considered safe, though thefts at any time of day can happen.

11 – Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and be especially alert whenever using an ATM machine.

12 – If you’re the victim of a crime, report it as soon as possible to local authorities and to the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca.

Bonus Tip: Some popular app-based ride-share services exist in Morocco; but only the French-based company Heetch is currently legally authorized by the Moroccan government to operate legally.

So, Should You Carry Your Passport With You in Morocco?

Once you’ve arrived in Morocco, you’re not required to carry your passport with you–a photocopy will do, as long as your original passport is in your hotel in the same city. You should carry a valid form of photo identification with you wherever you go, however (enhanced driver’s license, passport card, military ID, etc.).

And when traveling and touring around the country, you should always carry your original passport with you. Your passport should have at least six months of validity remaining at the time of your arrival. As far as obtaining a tourist visa, you do not need to do so if you’re staying for 90 days or less.

How Strict Is United With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

So, how strict is United Airlines with passengers’ luggage size and weight for carry-ons? And what about personal items? There are lots of questions you may have, I will cover these and a lot of them right here.

How Strict Is United With Carry-On & Personal Item Size?

I’ll lay out United’s current rules and regulations and then answer questions I frequently get about them.

How strict is United Airlines with its carry-on luggage policy?

Including handles and wheels, your carry on luggage

 on United Airlines shouldn’t exceed 

22” x 14” x 9” (56 x 35 x 22 cm)

For regular Basic Economy ticket holders, United Airlines carry-on baggage policy allows you to take 1 personal item (free of charge) and 0 additional carry-on items on your flight.

For all other ticket holders, United Airlines carry-on baggage policy includes 1 personal item (free of charge) and 1 carry-on item (free of charge).

United’s Basic Economy carry-on allowance

You are allowed one personal item to be taken with you.

Don’t bring luggage that is any larger than the dimensions above to your gate or they will have you check your bag. You will have a $25 fee for that checked bag as well.

Unless for some reason one of the following exceptions applies to you:

  • You are a cardholder of a MileagePlus qualifying credit card
  • You are a MileagePlus Premier member or a travel companion accompanying a MileagePlus Premier Member 
  • Gold member status of Star Alliance
  • You are flying across the Atlantic Ocean

United’s carry-on allowances for all other ticket types

For all other ticket types, you’re able to bring a main carry-on bag onboard as long as it doesn’t exceed the 22 x 14 x 9-inch dimensions mentioned above.

Bringing Carry on liquids with United

You can bring liquids onboard United’s flights so long as they make it through security screening with TSA. 

This includes your toiletries and other needed liquids and creams, so long as they comply with TSA’s liquid rules. Basically, each bottle can contain no more than 100ml / 3.4 fl. oz.

Then they need to easily fit into a re-sealable clear plastic bag. Ziplocs like these work perfectly. They can’t be any larger than 7.8 x 7.8 inches or 20 x 20 centimeters.

How strict is United Airlines with your carry-on size?

When it comes to enforcing its carry-on size policy, United is fairly strict.

They check more than other airlines do because of their policy about only bringing a personal item for Basic Economy ticket holders. 

As they are currently focused on maximizing revenue with every flight, they will enforce the rules more strictly than at other times… especially if the flight is fully booked.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible I suggest you comply with their regulations and not push it. For example, if you need a new carry-on bag that will fit United’s guidelines and most other airlines as well. Get this bag and don’t worry about it again.

How strict is United Airlines with your carry-on weight?

Carry-ons and personal items are not subject to weight restrictions at United. The dimensions of your bags are all you need to worry about.

Should I risk flying on United with an oversized carry-on?

Most people will tell you no, don’t even risk it. I agree. But know that if it is close, you will probably be fine. The worst thing to happen is they will check you bag and you will have to pay for a checked bag.

You will have to decide. 

Know that as your scan your boarding pass to enter the ramp and board your plane the United employee working the gate may ask you to fit your bag into their pre-sized steel cage to prove that it is the right size.

TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with it if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags here. They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots. Including the overhead bins on the plane!

United Airlines carry-on baggage fees

Like I said before, if you are within the size stated, you won’t have any additional fees. If your luggage is a little too big, you might have a $25 fee to check your bag. 

I travel with a bag that is larger than regulation and haven’t been asked to check it ever, but I can’t guarantee you won’t.

However, it’s cheap to get a bag that is within regulations. And then you don’t have to worry about it at all!

As long as the item can easily be carried and stored underneath the seat in front of you, airlines seldom check the size of your personal item.

You don’t need to worry about bringing additional items like books or jackets or blankets, cameras, etc count as your personal item. They don’t You can bring them in addition to your carry-on and personal item. 

Personal items are things like a purse, briefcase, extra backpack, or a large camera case.

Is the first bag free on United?

On United, the first personal item is free and so is one standard carry-on bag with a standard economy ticket. If your ticket is basic economy, there is no bag included at no cost, unless it is a transpacific or transatlantic flight. Then a single regular-sized carry-on is included in your ticket price.

So, how strict is United Airlines about carry-on and personal items?

You can expect your carry-on bag to be checked for size, as they are stricter than most.

In light of this, it’s best to you invest in a bag that complies with their carry-on regulations like this one.

If you’ve never been to Barbados, surely you’ve heard of it as a popular vacation destination. The island country of Barbados lies in the East Caribbean and is an independent British Commonwealth. Foreign visitors to Barbados, including U.S. citizens, are required to present a valid passport to enter the country, as well as proof of their anticipated departures (e.g., return tickets). Passports should be valid at the time of travel, and only one page for a passport entry stamp is required.

Travelers going to Barbados via cruise ship are allowed to use some other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant documentation, though a valid passport is highly recommended for cruise ship passengers as well. If a cruise passenger needs to return home from Barbados by plane for whatever reason, he or she will want to have their valid passport handy.  

Should I Carry My Passport When I Travel Throughout Barbados?

Barbados is a friendly country, especially to American and British tourists, and random police stops are rare to none. Be sure to have some sort of valid photo identification on you, as well as a photocopy of your passport handy, just in case. You may be asked to present these documents/photocopies at your hotel or bank. You can leave your passport securely locked away in your hotel room while traveling around Barbados. 

Traveling Safely With Your Passport

If you prefer to carry an original hardcopy of your passport with you as you travel around Barbados, carry it safely inside a security pocket of your pants, or in a money/security belt around your waist. Also keep a photocopy of your passport locked up at your hotel, and carry a photocopy with you securely in another pocket with you along with a valid photo identification.

As one added layer of security, scan your passport, and any travel insurance documentation, then email these scans to yourself so you can easily access them electronically if you should be required to.

The U.S. State Department highly recommends that you treat your passport like a valuable by keeping it secured under lock and key at your hotel while touring around.

Can the U.S. Embassy Intervene on Behalf of U.S. Citizens in Barbados?

The United States and Barbados have been on friendly terms since Barbados declared its independence from Great Britain back in 1966, so U.S. diplomatic efforts may have further reach in Barbados compared to its influence with other countries’ governments. A U.S. passport is not a way to avoid legal peril if you should find yourself in a bad situation.

Tips for Entry, Exit, and Traveling Through Barbados

1 – U.S. citizen tourists tend to be left alone as opposed to being targeted by criminals in Barbados. Theft, burglary, break-ins, etc., and even some violent crimes including sexual assault, shootings, murder, and drug-related violence do occur from time to time. Travelers, including U.S. citizens, are highly encouraged to remain vigilant in Barbados, especially in urbanized areas and tourist hotspots.

2 – Never leave valuables and possessions lying around unsecured in vehicles, hotel rooms, rental homes, beaches, public and tourist areas, etc. Avoid walking around alone, especially in metro areas, on beaches, and at night, and stay away from poorly lit areas.

3 – Travel only in clearly marked taxis and rideshares if you need to. Never get in a vehicle with an officially affiliated driver or other strangers.

4 – Don’t display expensive items out in the open or a lot of jewelry. Especially avoid taking lots of cash out in public.

5 – Travel with a companion and/or in groups, and stay on the beaten, well-lit path when it comes to night activities in reputable areas and venues. Vary your travel routines and avoid traveling using the same route every single day.

6 – Carefully assess any and all risks associated with recreational water activities, including your own physical condition and athletic skills. Be mindful of boat activity around the beach if you’re swimming. Don’t roam around alone, especially on isolated beaches or get on any watercraft with strangers. Stay away from water deeper than your waist if you’ve been drinking alcohol. 

7 – Avoid displaying flashy jewelry, expensive electronics, and large amounts of cash.

8 – Always be mindful and astute in your surroundings. Report suspicious goings-on immediately to police at #211.

9 – Never leave your drink alone in public and don’t accept drinks from strangers.

10 – Watch out for crowded shopping areas and markets, especially during the holiday season. Also be vigilant during events, celebrations, concerts, festivals, etc. Be extra vigilant on cruises and at parties.

11 – It is recommended that all U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for important alerts, security messages, alerts, and to make it easier to be located during an emergency.

12 – Avoid illegal activities like purchasing/using drugs (including marijuana) and engaging with prostitutes. Note that camouflage is illegal for civilians to wear in public places.

13 – Avoid purchasing or trying to sell counterfeit or pirated goods, as this can possibly get you into legal trouble.

14 – Do NOT enter the country with firearms and/or ammunition without prior permission from the government of Barbados. Contact the Embassy of Barbados with any and all questions regarding traveling with firearms.

15 – Visitors to Barbados are subject to all local laws. Violation of these laws can get you arrested, imprisoned, and even deported. This includes drug possession, use, or distribution. Barbados imposes heavy penalties for drug violations in the form of expensive fines and extensive incarceration.

The U.S. Embassy cannot do much for you if you’ve been caught violating Barbados’ laws.  Some crimes, including those against minors and elders, are also punishable in the United States, regardless of where these violations occurred or of what the local laws will allow.

If you should be arrested or detained, ask the police or other officials to alert your home country’s embassy immediately. 

16 – Never wear camouflage in public, including children. It is also illegal to carry items (like backpacks) that feature camouflage material. 

17 – Before visiting Barbados (or any other country), it’s recommended for travelers to be current with all vaccinations required by their home health administration office (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for U.S. citizens). Always check the country’s website for pertinent information regarding other vaccinations that might be required.

Travelers in Barbados may encounter tropical diseases like Chikungunya, Dengue, and/or Zika.

18 – The medical care available in Barbados is impressively advanced compared to other Caribbean countries. Note that medical transportation may take several hours to respond to an emergency situation. Ambulance attendants in Barbados are NOT allowed to administer lifesaving measures (like CPR) during transport to a medical facility.

19 – For U.S. citizens, the Medicare and Medicaid programs do not cover medical expenses, nor does the U.S. Embassy. It’s recommended to purchase personal medical Insurance for yourself and your family members traveling with you: Double check that your health insurance plan offers coverage in foreign countries. It’s also strongly recommended to purchase supplemental medical evacuation insurance.

20 – If you happen to be on prescription medication, it’s a good idea to verify with the Barbados government that your prescription medication is legal to bring into their country. Always carry prescription medication in its original packaging with your doctor’s signed prescription.

21 – Like in England, driving in Barbados is on the left-hand side of the road. vehicles involved in any accident need to remain unmoved until police arrive on the scene.

22 – Main roads tend to be well-marked and safe to drive on, though you may encounter lots of potholes. Rural roads can be narrow, or not well-marked, with inconsistent maintenance and frequent blind curves. Drive with caution especially out in the country and especially at night. Watch for crossing pedestrians and animals. Watch for sudden braking by vehicles ahead of you.

23 – Public transportation and registered rideshares and taxis tend to be safe, though you’ll likely want to avoid private minibuses (“Zed buses,” with license plates beginning with the letter “Z”) because they’re known for their drivers’ crazy and unpredictable driving. 

Victims of any crime should report those crimes immediately to local authorities, as well as to the embassies of their home countries. Though embassies can help you with documentation and even means to return home if needed, local authorities possess the jurisdiction necessary to investigate and prosecute crimes.

So, Should You Carry Your Passport With You in Barbados?

Though you’ll need a passport and proof of return passage to enter Barbados, you are not required to carry a passport with you while visiting. Keep it safely locked up in your hotel room. Carry a valid photo ID and a photocopy of your passport in case you should need to present it at your hotel or bank. You won’t need a visa for visiting Barbados as a tourist for up to six full months.

Should You Carry Your Passport With You in Canada?If you’ve never been to visit Canada, the good news is that it’s a super easy country for traveling, especially for U.S. citizens–other than for crossing the border back and forth, there should be very little need to carry your passport with you as you travel around to visit our friendly neighbors to the north.

You’ll rarely if ever, be asked to present a valid form of photo identification, other than by, perhaps, your hotel reception clerk. A driver’s license and credit card should be all you ever need.

You can keep your passport locked safely up wherever you may be staying. You may feel comfortable carrying around a photocopy of your passport, however, in addition to your photo ID and credit card(s).

Your passport should be valid at the time of its use, and you’ll need only one page for your passport entry stamp. Though Canada is a friendly country, there does still exist the possibility of having valuables (including your passport) stolen.

Should you ever lose or have your passport stolen, report it to the local police immediately, as well as to the U.S. Embassy.

As far as U.S. official services are concerned, note that the U.S. Consulate in Winnipeg provides emergency services for U.S. citizens. For other normal, routine services such as help with passports, and visas, and for notary public services, you’ll go to other U.S. Consulates General, usually to the one in Calgary.

Do I Need a Visa to Enter Canada?

More good news for U.S. citizen travelers going to Canada as a tourist: you’ll only need a visa if you’re planning on staying more than 180 days (~ six months). 

Other types of travel throughout Canada (other than tourism) will typically require some sort of visa. You can find out the most current information regarding Canadian visa requirements at the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Something else worth noting for those considering a visit to Canada: if you have a criminal record, you may be denied access into Canada. Don’t fret, though, as this is a problem that can be overcome. To assess whether or not you would be denied entry for having a criminal record, and for relevant instructions regarding how to resolve this criminal designation, also refer to the IRCC website.

Immigration authorities from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will make the determination regarding your ability to enter Canada. 

Have you ever heard of the NEXUS trusted traveler program? The United States and Canada both encourage frequent travelers between the two countries to join the NEXUS program for easier access both ways.  

Should You Carry a Copy of Your Passport When You Travel Throughout Canada?

You’re probably best off keeping your passport safely locked away in your hotel room while you’re in Canada, though it may make you more comfortable to carry a photocopy with you, in addition to a valid form of photo identification and your credit card(s). Canadian police are not known for stopping people on the streets routinely, so you’ll rarely if ever be asked to present ID.

Some U.S. diplomatic intervention for U.S. citizens is possible, though it depends on the issue at hand. Being a U.S. citizen likely won’t get you out of legal problems you may cause for yourself while in Canada.  

Use of Your Passport Traveling Between the U.S. and Canada

For entry into Canada, all travelers are legally required to present proof of their home citizenship and a valid form of photo identification. U.S. citizens may present either a valid U.S. passport card, a valid U.S. passport, or a NEXUS (trusted travel program) card. U.S. children travelers younger than 16 years only need to present proof of U.S. citizenship, like with a birth certificate.

For entry back in to the United States, U.S. citizens traveling by air from Canada are required to present a U.S. passport book or some other approved form of identification.

For those traveling with minors for whom you do not have full legal custody (including divorced parents), the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) may request a letter of authorization from the minor’s parents or legal guardian(s).

Those entering Canada via private boat (including recreational craft), need to present themselves to the CBSA once they’ve arrived. The CBSA’s website offers all relevant reporting requirements.

Tips for Entry, Exit, and Traveling Through Canada

1 – Canada is known for having crime rates lower than those in the U.S., though all types of crimes, including violent ones, can occur, especially in metropolitan areas. Thieves can target parked cars, particularly in tourist areas, so don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, including in the trunk. Some cities like Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto may impose fines on travelers who leave their car doors unlocked or who leave valuables in view. Pickpockets in Canada are also prevalent, so be extra mindful of your property and valuables.

2 – As in the U.S., 911 is the emergency services’ telephone number throughout Canada.

3 – Demonstrations in Canada may often occur in regard to political or economic events, world events, and/or on politically significant holidays. Canadian national holidays are Canada Day (July 1) and Victoria Day (the Monday between the 18th and the 24th of May). Other provincial holidays may also be politically significant for Canadians in those areas.

Demonstrations in any country can be unexpected and have outcomes that are difficult to predict, so whenever possible, do your best to avoid areas near any kind of demonstrations and protests. Violence at these gatherings isn’t common, but U.S. citizens are still advised to avoid them and to remain aware and vigilant whenever traveling abroad, including in Canada.
 

4 – Local media can offer up-to-date traffic and event advisories.

5 – Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of of any crimes should report them immediately to the local authorities, as well as to the nearest U.S. Embassy. Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes that occur in Canada.

6 – It is recommended that all U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for important alerts, security messages, alerts, and to make it easier to be located during an emergency.

7 – Visitors to Canada are subject to any and all local laws, and violation of such, whether knowingly or not, can result in your arrest, deportation, and fines and/or imprisonment. 8 – Canadian laws prohibit the possession and distribution of controlled substances and narcotics, including many that may be deemed legal in some U.S. states. Canada has legalized personal use of recreational cannabis, but their laws prohibit the transportation of cannabis across their borders.

You run the risk of sizeable fines, imprisonment, and permanent expulsion from Canada if you are caught violating their controlled substance laws.

9 – If you are arrested or detained in Canada, ask the police or other officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. U.S. diplomatic services can probably help you to some degree, but U.S. citizenship alone will not help you avoid legal troubles you may have gotten yourself into.

10 – Those establishing businesses or professions that require specific permits and/or licensing can find pertinent information from local authorities, and should do so before opening up shop.

11 – Counterfeit and/or pirated goods are easily obtainable in many countries, but they may be deemed illegal by Canadian and U.S. laws. You can also be fined in addition to having to surrender them if you try to bring them back into the U.S. 

12 – Canada enforces much stricter controls over firearms than does the U.S. Violation of these controls can result in not only prosecution, but also imprisonment. Travelers bringing any and all firearms and/or ammunition into Canada must declare this property in writing with a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (NFD) form.

If your plans include borrowing and using someone else’s firearm while in Canada, you are required to apply for and obtain a Temporary Firearms Borrowing License ahead of time. These forms must be signed and presented in triplicate in the presence of a CBSA officer at the border upon entry. Note that you won’t be able to make photocopies of these forms at the border. 

13 – Canadian officials are required by law to confiscate undeclared firearms, ammunition, and any other weapons from travelers crossing the Canadian border. These confiscated items will not be returned and you may be arrested and/or imprisoned.

Inspect all your belongings thoroughly before traveling to Canada to avoid inadvertently transporting any weapons, firearms, or ammunition into Canada. All relevant information and downloadable forms are available at the Canadian Firearms Program website.  

So, Should You Carry Your Passport With You in Canada?

Other than presenting a valid passport upon entering Canada and then to return to one’s home country, visitors are not required to carry their passports with them while in Canada. You should carry some valid form of photo ID and your credit cards securely with you, but it is rare to never that you might be stopped by police and asked to present your ID. Canada is a very tourist-friendly country, especially for U.S. citizens.
